I am constantly asked which trees offer  the most benefit to the home and landscape when used in landscape lighting, or focal tree lighting designs. Homeowners want to take advantage of the best aesthetic return by making sure to choose the right tree(s) in their landscape for tree lighting.

When you are looking for the biggest bang for your buck when it comes to outdoor lighting, the genre of outdoor lighting that will ultimately be the most dramatic is tree lighting.  Trees as a species naturally have a great deal of character. No two trees present themselves identically. For example the character and effect that is interpreted through lighting a mesquite tree is far different from the interpretation conveyed through lighting a palm tree. Choosing specific trees within your landscape for tree lighting can breathe new life into your landscape and give your entire property a distinct feel.

To prove my point, I am going to take two trees that are commonly used in San Antonio landscape designs and by example show you the way various trees can make you feel when you add tree lighting. Palms trees and mesquite trees are two beloved trees of the landscapes in our area. Palms exhibit a unique branching structure that is all their own. Their abundant overlapping branching pattern is beautiful to look at and makes a wonderful focus of tree lighting designs. The bark, wide caliber of the trunk and tall height of palms exudes majesty and presence and is one of the most requested tree by our customer to use as a focal tree lighting candidate. Palms are very exotic and can take your senses to a place where you can leave your cares behind and relax with a fruity drink. By adding tree lighting to the palm trees in your landscape, you can take yourself to an exotic far-away place without ever leaving your backyard.

Mesquite trees are hauntingly beautiful trees. Their outstretched and weeping, curved limbs create a branching pattern that conveys wisdom and elegance in the landscape. When Mesquite trees are lit they cast shadows in the areas surrounding the tree that mimic light dancing from the glow of a full moon; eerie and beautiful at the same time. On September 4, 1882, Thomas Edison introduced the world to electric lighting. When he switched on his electrical power distribution system, 110-volt direct current turned on 400 electric lights in offices on Spruce, Wall, Nassau, and Pearl streets in lower Manhattan. In 127 years, electric lighting has come a long way.

Oscar Peterson of Outdoor Lighting Perspectives in Watertown said that the lighting industry is changing to meet the demands of energy-conscious homeowners. New technology makes lighting the home inside and out more convenient, safe, and “green.” Landscaping usually brings gardening to mind, but outdoor lighting can have a large impact on curb appeal as well as security.

According to Peterson, outdoor lighting design is one of the fastest growing trends in home decorating, creating more beautiful neighborhoods and safer, more secure homes. “Ten years ago, virtually no one was doing outdoor lighting in a pleasing, effective manner,” Peterson said. “Today, the practice of outdoor lighting has become much more sophisticated and effective, resulting in systems that are practical and add to the beauty of a home as seen at night.”

The most common error that homeowners make with outdoor lighting, according to Peterson, is emphasizing the use of floodlights, either mounted on the home and shining down or placed in the front of the home and shining onto the façade. While floodlights may give a sense of wellbeing, they can actually create safety and security problems.

“When you have a floodlight shining toward your house and you look outside, all you can see is the glare from the floodlight, which can protect intruders from detection,” he said. “Plus, if the floodlight is on the eve of the house and shining out, you will be blinded as you approach the house and risk stumbling and falling.”

Floodlights illuminate both the area where they are directed and adjacent areas. The result is neighbors who must endure the bright glare of their neighbor’s lights. “Floodlighting also does nothing for the aesthetics of a home at night. When you are blasting 500 watt lights against a home, all of the detail and texture of the home is lost," he said. More savvy homeowners are selecting outdoor lighting systems with a series of energy-efficient, low-wattage lights strategically placed around the home. The lights are positioned on the ground and shine up on distinctive features, creating a pleasing effect and providing sufficient light to ward off intruders and assure sure footing.

“Uplighting provides security because you are placing lights in the areas where an intruder might hide, such as bushes adjacent to the home,” he said. “When you look from inside the home out, you are not blinded by lights, so that you can see if anyone is in the area. Even when looking from across the street, uplighting will create a silhouette of anyone next to your home.”

Carefully placed uplighting also contributes to safety, by providing sufficient light for navigating sidewalks and steps without shining directly into your face. Path lights assure walking safety without light spilling over into a neighbor’s yard. While practical concerns are essential with outdoor lighting, homeowners can also use uplighting systems to add to the beauty of their homes.

He advises placing lights to accent interesting architectural or landscape features. “You can accent the texture of the brick, masonry above windows, or other distinctive elements," he said. "It’s an opportunity to accent ornamental trees, such as Crabapples, River Birches, or Japanese Maples."

Stucco and clapboard homes also come to life at night with properly positioned, energy-efficient, low-wattage lights. They should be positioned no more than four feet away from the area they are lighting and positioned less than 30 degrees from vertical. Don’t forget the deck or patio, where outdoor lighting can add to safety, security, and enjoyment.

“For patios, consider using path lights around the perimeter, which will reflect light onto the patio,” he said. “With decks, we suggest lights with a shielded light source underneath the handrails. These lights provide just the right light for conversation and are much more pleasant than typical deck lighting with a bright light shining from the side of a home.”

According to Peterson, low-wattage halogen lights of 20-35 watts are much brighter than incandescent lights of the same wattage. "A properly installed low-wattage system will consume approximately 30 percent less energy than a lighting plan that emphasizes line voltage floodlights.”

What would Edison think of advancements in the industry? Is it worthwhile for homeowners to install modern outdoor landscape lighting? Peterson agreed that making the change won’t compromise comfort or style. New lighting technology can save energy, while creating inviting, comfortable spaces – making light greener and better.

Comparison Shopping for Landscape Lights

In today’s economic times, it pays more than ever to do comparison shopping.  The same advice holds true when looking for a landscape lighting company to handle your landscape lighting needs.

The following list are some things you should inquire about when evaluating a Landscape Lighting Company:

1. Reputation.  How long have they been in business?  Do they have references?  Are they a member of the local Better Business Bureau?
2. Type of Fixtures.  Do they use a variety of fixtures based on the application, or is it “one type for all applications”?  Do they use well lights for facade lighting?  Do they do uplighting?  Downlighting?  Do they offer low voltage?  Line voltage (household current)?
3. Quality of Fixtures.  Are they painted fixtures?  Copper?  Aluminum?  Plastic?
4. Warranty.  What kind of warranty is offered on the fixtures?  Is the warranty for at least ten years?
5. Service Plan.  Do they offer an annual maintenance plan?  What does it consist of?
6. Type of Transformer.  Is the transformer a pluggable type?  Is it a multi-tap?  Is the timer built in or is it a separate unit?
7. Lighting Control.  How is the lighting controlled?  Timer?  Photocell?  Lighting control from inside the home?  Can I integrate my porch lights and existing lights/switches with the system?
8. Night Time Demonstration.  Do they offer a night time demonstration?  Is it complimentary?
9. Made in the USA.  Are their fixtures made in the USA?  Are they handcrafted?
10. Dark Sky Compliant.  Is their system Dark Sky Compliant?

At Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of San Antonio, we’ve done your homework for you!  We’ve asked ourselves these very questions, and are proud to say we can answer each and every one of them in a manner that will benefit YOU, the homeowner!  Here are our answers to the ten areas mentioned above:

1. Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of San Antonio has been in business in San Antonio for almost two years, and is a proud member of the Better Business Bureau.  The Our parent company, Outdoor Lighting Perspectives Franchise Corporation, has been in business for almost fifteen years, and has over 70 locations around the world.
2. We use a variety of fixtures depending upon the specific application.  We use well lights with large PAR-36 bulbs for lighting the façade, large trees, and other objects, smaller bullet type fixtures with MR-16 (projector style) bulbs for smaller shrubs, number signs, or statues.
3. We use extruded PVC in the construction of our well lights, and all our path and specialty lights are made of solid copper.  We never use painted or powder coated fixtures, as they still peel with time.
4. We offer a one year warranty on our bulbs, assuming a normal operation time of sunset to approximately midnight; a ten year warranty on our fixtures; a lifetime warranty on our transformers; a two year warranty on our Lighting Control Automation.
5. We offer an annual maintenance plan, where we will come and change all bulbs, rebury exposed wire, trim shrubs, treat with fire ant retardant, and check voltages and transformer operation to completely recondition the system for another year.
6. Our transformers are all pluggable, multi-tap transformers, which allow us to use a variety of timing systems, especially our state-of-the art Lighting Control Automation.  A multi-tap transformer allows us to fine tune the voltages at each fixture to be sure every one is between 11.0-11.5 volts.  Because the timer is a separate system, a timer failure does not render the entire transformer unusable, as happens with the cheaper integrated timer/transformer systems you find at the box stores.
7. While we offer timers and photocells, our state-of-the-art Lighting Control Automation allows the homeowner complete control of the lighting from inside the home, along with allowing the integration of porch lights, security lights, and switches into the system, for an added level of home security.
8. We always offer the homeowner a Night Time Demonstration, so they can see exactly what their home looks like with our lighting installed.
9. All of our fixtures are handcrafted right here in the USA.
10. Our low voltage systems are fully Dark Sky Compliant.
